BIODIVERSITY PRESERVATION
After more than thirty years of conservation efforts a healthy forest area, with different habitat types were created and endangered flagship species and other common flora and fauna species were re-colonized in Baghmara Community Forest. Although the community forest is a rather small, it supports a large number of species and is also most favorable habitat for many rare and endangered species. Similarly, the rich vegetation diversity has created the forest as potential site of high biological value. Moreover, the Chitwan National Park and important Barandabhar biological corridor links this forest to south and north, respectively.
This forest area is mainly riverine forest dominate with grassland and wetland habitat. The dominant species in forest are Bhellar (Trewia nudiflora) and Padke (Albizia sp), Simal (Bombax ceiba), Kutmiro (Litsea monopetala), Sissoo (Dalbergia sissoo) and Khayer(Acacia catechu). Similarly, the patch of grasslands are dominated by Imperata cylindrical, Saccharum spontaneum, Ageratum conyzoides, Peperoxia pellucida, Cyanodon dactylon, and Themeda villosa species. From the community forest more than 81 species of trees and 158 species of medicinal herbs including endangered Butea monosperma and Rauvolfia serpentina have been recorded.
Most importantly, this forest has provided an excellent habitat for the wildlife and harbors around 21 species of mammals, 203 species of birds, 72 species of butterflies, 25 species of fish and 17 species of reptiles. Flagship species from Baghmara forest are Royal Bengal Tiger(Panthera tigris tigris), Greater One-horned Rhinoceros(Rhinoceros unicornis), Common Leopard (Panthera pardus), Sloth Bear( Melursus ursinus,), Sambar Deer(Cervus unicolor), Spotted Deer (Axis axis), Gharial Crocodile (Gavialis gangeticus), Marsh Mugger Crocodile (Crocodylus palustris).
